The New Year

I know we’re only a month and a half into Winter, but there’s something about the spring-like weather of February to get my heart all a’ patter over the fact that February is always one of the most amazing months in the Bay Area. It’s freaking gorgeous here.

Moreso, this weather makes me feel as though anything is possible. From getting even healthier this year, to writing more, and taking care to be mindful. This bug that I’ve been feeling didn’t just start with February though, it started with the first day of the New Year.

There’s something about this year that’s getting me so amped up. I can’t explain it. I’ve never felt like this before with the coming of a new year. It’s not that last year sucked by any means, but this year — there’s something about it that is going to be magical.

Before you get all eye-rolly on me and sigh over the fact that I’m being all hippy-dippy and stuff, I’m not. There really is a higher consciousness at play here.

A few weeks back I met with my yoga teacher for a quick chat and we had the most amazing conversation. It was so inspiring, and what I took away from it was that anything is possible, so long as you set your mind to it and focus on the task at hand. Little deposits into your personal bank is what is going to make you a winner in the long run.

I want to write a novel?

Great. Write every day.

It doesn’t have to be two hours (who has that kind of time?), or even one. It can be a one-page kind of day.

Aside from slowing depositing into my personal creativity bank, there’s the bad, bad habit if not being in the moment. All too often we get caught up in the business of the day — what’s in your inbox, who said what on Facebook, what’s for dinner, what to watch on TV, etc — and we hardly take time to be in the moment anymore. We are hardwired for immediate gratification and immediate success. But this isn’t life and this isn’t how it works.

Take American Idol as an example. One of my husband’s old colleague’s daughter is on it now (Jesaiah Baer - she’s going to Hollywood!!) and that is awesome. While she’s only 16, she isn’t lucky — she is determined, hardworking and extremely passionate about singing. This is her dream and she’s doing everything in her power to make it happen.

This is what people forget in life. That in order to be successful at anything, you need to work at it. Sure you may hear this a million times a day, but I sometimes I don’t feel that many people heed this advice.

So take it as a friendly reminder, and set your mind to being in the moment now.

What are you going to accomplish this year?
